Virgen del Carmen is the patron of fisherman and the sea. On this day, the churches along the coast take their statues of the virgin - some of them very big - and take them on a procession down to the sea. The exact procedure varies, but often, a mass is said by the sea, before the virgin is taken out to sea in a small fishing boat, and the fishes are blessed in her presence.
