Whats happening in Almeria

Saturday, 6th December, 2008 - Constitution Day - Constitution Day celebrates the date of the 1978 referendum which moved Spain to full democracy.

Monday, 8th December, 2008 - Imaculada Concepción - The patron saint of Spain, the Immaculate Conception, is celebrated in this national holiday.

Thursday, 18th December, 2008 - Royal British Legion, Albox

Thursday, 25th December, 2008 - Christmas day - National holiday across Spain - but don't forget that the celebrations continue until January 6th. In some countries, gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve, or on Christmas Day, but in Spain, the gifts are kept back for the more logical date of the 6th of January, when gifts were given to the holy child. Boxing Day is not celebrated in Spain.

Sunday, 28th December, 2008 - Dia de Los Inocentes - This day remembers the day that the young children were murdered in Bethlehem in an attempt to catch the Christ child. It may seem a little bizarre celebrating this event in such a way, but on this day, jokes are played on the "innocents" - the same things that happens on April 1st in so many countries. And it's also an excuse (!) for more ferias.

The Province of Almeria

The province of Almeria is one of the eight provinces of Andalucia, and is found in the south eastern corner of Spain. Almeria, the city, is the capital of Almeria, the province.

In the Sierra Nevada National Park, you will find the only desert in Europe, the Tabernas desert. This desert area has been used as the setting for over 300 films, perhaps the best known of which are the so-called Spaghetti Westerns, typified by the Clint Eastwood films of that era. But it has also been used for various Indiana Jones films, parts of 2001, Lawrence of Arabia, and many more.

The continuing use of the area for film-making has created various spin offs, inlcuding the three Cowboy Villages, which have regular shows where visitors can take part, as well as plenty of memorabilia for the film buffs.

This is warmest province in Andalusia, with an average of over 3000 hours of sun every year, mainly between Easter and November. And the clear skies mean that this area is an excellent site for the most powerful telescope in Europe, which is located near Gérgal.

This area produces vast amounts of vegetables and plants, most of them under plastic sheeting. Although jobs and a certain amount of prosperity have been brought into the area, it means that huge areas of the coast are covered in plastic sheeting. Most of the produce is exported to Europe and beyond.

The area also exports Macaels white marble.

Also in this area is the protected area known as Cabo de Gata, which is one of Andalucia's wildlife areas and coastal reserve.

Site Language  The Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almería and Costa in Mojacar

We are based in the beautiful coastal resort of Mojácar in the sun-drenched southeast corner of enchantment in the province of Almería in Spanish Andalucía. Our worship is in the church of San Pascual de Baylon on the hillside in the village of El Agua de Enmedio. The Rev'd Canon Hugh Broad has been a priest for 37 years - born in Cheltenham where his mother ran a Draper's shop and his father was a policeman. Further back on his father's side he is related to cricketer Chris Broad who played for Gloucestershire & England, and this no doubt explains his love of cricket, although there's not much of that here. On his mother's side his greatgrandfather was Matthew Webb, the first person to swim the channel who later met his demise going over Niagara Falls in a barrel - hence Hugh's eccentricities!

Site Language  The Entertainer Online in Mojacar

This site, started in September 2002, is called The Entertainer Online to continue The Entertainer name, the name of a weekly newspaper started by me in 1985 which ran without interruption until 1999 when a three year option to buy was taken by staffers. They never concluded the deal, or paid me, but changed the name when the option expired in April 2002 instead. Que vamos a hacer. I have since resurrected the name, in print, as a monthly paper called The New Entertainer.
