The Autonomous Community of Castile and León is one of the autonomous communities of Spain. It is located to the north west of Madrid, and has no coastline. It is the largest community in Spain, covering over 94,000 square kilometres, and with a 2005 population of two and a half million people. It was formed by the joining of León and Castilla la Vieja in 1983, although the history of the marriage of these two areas goes back to the eleventh century
The River Douro crosses this area, and is the reason for the many red wines produced in this area, and together with the wonderful white wines from places like Rueda makes it one of the important wine areas.
Castilla and León is crossed by two major ancient routes, the ancient pilgrimage trail of Camino de Santiago, and the Roman road, Via de la Plata.
