Coin

Coín is a town and municipality in Málaga province, Spain, about 20 miles west of the provincial capital, Málaga and 20 miles north of Marbella.

With an official population of just over 20,000 inhabitants, Coín is perhaps the most up and coming inland town on the Costa Del Sol. Foreigners now make up a substantial proportion of the towns inhabitants and are attracted to Coín due to the fact it is only 25 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Málaga and Marbella, including the 50 km stretch of coastline in between which includes the popular resorts of Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Benalmadena. Coín however retains its original small Spanish town look and feel.

Coín is also a modern town and has a great infrastructure with the newly built La Trocha shopping centre, at least 4 large supermarkets, a Spanish cinema, bowling alley and plenty of quality bars and restaurants.

Coin has a rich history with both the Moors and the Romans ruling the town in its past, with the Moors defining and controlling the town from 929AD until 1485 when the Christians invaded and took control of Coín. The town is also famous for being the location for the doomed BBC series Eldorado which was filmed in the Los Llanos de Nacimiento region.

Coín is set amongst the stunning scenery of Andalucian mountains, with the Sierra de Las Nieves to the north providing a picturesque snowy background when the Spanish winter creeps in, during which temperatures can near freezing much to the surprise of new foreign inhabitants and visitors.

Christmas day

Thursday, 25th December, 2008

National holiday across Spain - but don't forget that the celebrations continue until January 6th. In some countries, gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve, or on Christmas Day, but in Spain, the gifts are kept back for the more logical date of the 6th of January, when gifts were given to the holy child. Boxing Day is not celebrated in Spain.

Dia de Los Inocentes

Sunday, 28th December, 2008

This day remembers the day that the young children were murdered in Bethlehem in an attempt to catch the Christ child. It may seem a little bizarre celebrating this event in such a way, but on this day, jokes are played on the "innocents" - the same things that happens on April 1st in so many countries. And it's also an excuse (!) for more ferias.

New Years Day

Three Kings Procession

Monday, 5th January, 2009

Every village and every city in Spain celebrates the Three Kings (or the Three Wise Men, as they are sometimes known in the UK). In the evening, a procession goes through the village or city. Gifts, in the form of boiled sweets, are thrown to the crowds, and children young and old scrabble about for the gift. A special cake is also eaten, and if you find the figurine or coin contained in the cake - then, depending on the family tradition, either you pay for the cake, or you can expect good luck in the coming year. The cakes are taken by every family, almost without exception.

Events after Saturday, 17th January, 2009 will appear in due course

Well known Dutch advertising photographer, Christian Lohman, is now living in the South of Spain. After having lived in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and travelling and working from there, he has decided to move to Andalucia a few years ago, to a climate with more chances of having sunny days, and also with the convenience of a large professional photographic studio nearby which can be used if needed.

With many years of experience, he has covered most fields and techniques and is always eager to discover new areas.

Site Language  Looking after the welfare of Stray and Abandoned animals

For many years we helped animals in England independently.

In 1998, we moved to the Costa del Sol, and, wherever it was possible, helped animals. In 2002, we moved inland, and we became even more aware of the plight of so many animals.

We now concentrate in helping animals in Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and the surrounding areas with like-minded people. We also raise funds to help the small rescue centres that look after abandoned and stray animals.
