Coín is a town and municipality in Málaga province, Spain, about 20 miles west of the provincial capital, Málaga and 20 miles north of Marbella.

With an official population of just over 20,000 inhabitants, Coín is perhaps the most up and coming inland town on the Costa Del Sol. Foreigners now make up a substantial proportion of the towns inhabitants and are attracted to Coín due to the fact it is only 25 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Málaga and Marbella, including the 50 km stretch of coastline in between which includes the popular resorts of Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Benalmadena. Coín however retains its original small Spanish town look and feel.

Coín is also a modern town and has a great infrastructure with the newly built La Trocha shopping centre, at least 4 large supermarkets, a Spanish cinema, bowling alley and plenty of quality bars and restaurants.

Coin has a rich history with both the Moors and the Romans ruling the town in its past, with the Moors defining and controlling the town from 929AD until 1485 when the Christians invaded and took control of Coín. The town is also famous for being the location for the doomed BBC series Eldorado which was filmed in the Los Llanos de Nacimiento region.

Coín is set amongst the stunning scenery of Andalucian mountains, with the Sierra de Las Nieves to the north providing a picturesque snowy background when the Spanish winter creeps in, during which temperatures can near freezing much to the surprise of new foreign inhabitants and visitors.

Site LanguageAnimals-In-Distress (A.I.D.)

A.I.D. is a registered charity (No. 07974) in Andalucia dedicated to finding homes for stray/abandoned animals found in Coin and surrounding villages in this part of Malaga. All the Dogs and Cats that are young or sick are looked after by our network of volunteer private foster homes as well as in our own home in Coin, which helps the animals get use to a family environment. We have volunteer foster homes at the moment in Alhaurin el Grande, Cartama, Benalmadena and Coin and need many more. Some of our cats & dogs are also kept in a few and temporary kennels in Coin and Cartama. At anyone time ach one of us will foster from one to several animals and every year we home an average of 260 animals. Most are homed here in Spain, others go to Belgium, Germany, Holland and a few to the UK.

All of our animals have a health check and if applicable they are micro chipped, vaccinated and neutered or castrated. The medical bill for each puppy or grown dog can be from 70 – 200 euros each. This amount does not include things like other type of operations, food, collars, leads, flights, travel boxes etc. As we do not receive any type of funding from the government or local authority, we ask for a donation towards the veterinary costs of an animal when you adopt it.

We also try to raise funds by holding events as well as selling donated goods in our charity shop in Alhaurin el Grande. Our charity does not have any paying members and we are classified as ‘Animos sin lucro’, which an exact translation would be ‘intentions without profit’ in other words all the funds raised are used for helping the animals and none of our shop volunteers or the charity committee, which includes ourselves takes a wage. Please help us to help the animals.

Please note that our foster homes and kennels do not have opening hours, therefore to see an animal please telephone first.

Site LanguageLooking after the welfare of Stray and Abandoned animals

For many years we helped animals in England independently.

In 1998, we moved to the Costa del Sol, and, wherever it was possible, helped animals. In 2002, we moved inland, and we became even more aware of the plight of so many animals.

We now concentrate in helping animals in Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and the surrounding areas with like-minded people. We also raise funds to help the small rescue centres that look after abandoned and stray animals.
